Hypnosis as a tool to change our lives has been around for 100's of years, and has always existed in the plant and animal kingdom. Hibernating animals turn inwards during the winter months and are able to exist for long periods of time in deep sleep state without needing food or water.
No one knows where or when the practice of hypnosis originated; there is evidence in ancient Egyptian paintings, which depicts an apparently sleeping person with others who seem to be making hypnotic passes over them.
In the eighteen century an Austrian doctor named Franz Anton Mesmer found he could cure diseases in humans without the use of medicine or surgery. He believed he had a magnetic force which could regulate the flow of magnetic fluids in people to produce cure. In many cases his cures were successful; his methods were later known as Mesmerism.

In 1951 Dr. Albert Mason was asked to help a 16 year old boy who was suffering with an extremely bad case of ichthyosis, a hereditary condition in which the patient has fewer sweat and sebaceous glands than usual, this causes the skin to become dry and scaly.
His conditions was so bad his body was covered in a thick, smelly, black layer of hard dried skin, which oozed a bloody serum; Having suffered this condition since birth and with conventional medicine failing to help him. It is believed that Dr Mason at a hospital in East Grinstead in Sussex, in front of sceptical members of staff, hypnotized the boy and gave him suggestions that his left arm would become clear.
Five days later the blackened skin became crumbly and fell off. Revealing reddened but otherwise normal skin, ten days after that the boy's arm was clear. Dr Mason continued to use hypnosis on the boy; achieving remarkable results. The case was reported in the British Medical Journal for 1952. Dr Mason wrote a follow up article 3 years later reporting that the results appeared to be permanent.
Since then the study of hypnosis and the power of the mind to effect the body has been reported in great depth and with huge success. Our scientific studies use the placebo as a control, and the uses of hypnosis continues to grow at an astounding rate.
