To find out the best panic attack treatment, first let me explain what can happen when you experience one ... A panic attack is a severe state anxiety and fear which often occurs suddenly, without warning and sometimes for no apparent reason. As well as anxiety, you may experience other symptoms during a panic attack. Some of these are listed below; you may feel one or a number of them:
- Sweating and trembling.
- Hot flushes or chills.
- Feeling short of breath, tightening of the throat.
- Chest pains.
- Feeling faint or sick.
These physical symptoms do not necessarily mean there is a physical problem with that area. These symptoms mainly take place because of an overdrive of nervous impulses from your brain to various parts of your body.
During a panic attack you may notice yourself over-breathing (hyperventilating). In doing so you are blowing out too much carbon dioxide which changes the acidity in your blood. This can then cause more symptoms such as confusion and cramps, and make palpitations, dizziness, and pins and needles ... If this starts to happen the attack can seem even more frightening, so you over-breathe even more and the cycle keeps on going.
So what can you do to change this cycle? The best panic attack treatments are based in psychological therapy which has proven long-term benefits; and it will usually be in the form of cognitive behavioural therapy. CBT is thought to be one of the most effective forms of treatment for panic disorders. It will involve you having regular sessions, in which your therapist may talk to you about the way you react when you feel anxious or experience a panic attack and what you are thinking about when you are experiencing anxiety or having an attack.

During my initial therapy, we first started working on my fundamental issues. Immediately, I began to recognise the changes in my behaviour and to feel relaxed and reassured. It was a huge relief. I began..."
