May you all be happy,

May you all be healthy,

May you all be free from suffering.

Between the 21st and 22nd of December I celebrate a very old festival called the Winter Solstice - a festival of peace to celebrate the coming of the light. It is held on the shortest day and longest night of the year.

The Winter Solstice celebrates the rebirth of the Sun God, the son of the Goddess and in ancient times, when people were more intimately connected with the cycles of nature this was of great importance. The sunlight gives us not only its warmth for food but life itself, the true Source of our energy.

Our Christmas rituals show many of the old ways even today. Sprigs of holly and ivy were brought into the home to celebrate the Winter Solstice, being evergreen plants, they symbolise the eternal nature of the sun, which never dies, but merely sleeps during the winter months.

The Yule log once brought into the home was lit to banish evil spirits, defeat darkness and bring good luck for the coming year. It's focus is on family togetherness and the union of all humankind. Yule logs would smoulder for twelve days before another ceremony was held to put them out. A part of the log was kept to be strapped to the plough the next spring to bless the land, and another piece was taken to light the next Yule's log.

Mistletoe, still a central part of Christmas celebrations today it is hung over doors for protection, the kissing came much later on! Mistletoe grows only on oak trees and is associated with peace and goodwill, both values that still surround this time of year.
