Hypnosis can be utilised in many ways allowing the client to make positive changes in their life. It is used often in the medical and dental fields to reduce pain during procedures.
Psychologists and psychiatrists use it as an adjunct to their treatments and self-hypnosis is an integral component in yoga, bio-feedback and meditation. Top athletes are even using hypnosis & self-hypnosis to assist them during training and to increase performance during competitions.

Hypnotherapy is the application of hypnosis as a form of treatment, usually for relieving pain or conditions related to one's state of mind. When a client enters a state of hypnosis, they're more receptive to suggestion and other therapy. The most common use of hypnotherapy is to remedy conditions such as obesity, addiction, pain, anxiety, stress, amnesia, phobias, and performance but many others can also be treated by hypnosis.
Contrary to popular belief, the British Medical Association (BMA) acknowledges hypnotherapy as a form of "orthodox", as opposed to complementary or alternative, medicine. For the past hundred years there has been an abundance of evidence that psychological and physiological changes could be produced by hypnotism. In 1999, the British Medical Journal (BMJ) published a Clinical Review of current medical research on hypnotherapy and relaxation therapies, it concluded:
- There is good evidence from randomised controlled trials that both hypnosis and relaxation techniques can reduce anxiety particularly that related to stressful situations such as receiving chemotherapy
- They are also effective for panic disorders and insomnia, particularly when integrated into a package of cognitive therapy
- A systematic review has found that hypnosis enhances the effects of Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) for conditions such as phobias, obesity, and anxiety
- Randomised controlled trials support the use of various relaxation techniques for treating both acute and chronic pain
- Randomised trials have shown hypnosis to be of value in asthma and in irritable bowel syndrome
- Relaxation and hypnosis are often used in cancer patients. There is strong evidence from randomised trials of the effectiveness of hypnosis and relaxation for cancer related anxiety, pain, nausea, and vomiting, particularly in children
